Does packaging matter in food delivery?

While most restaurants have temporarily closed down due to Coronavirus, some have started cloud kitchens to still keep their business running, this has also given opportunities to home chefs and home businesses to grow their business. Due to the competition and fear of the virus, most food businesses are documenting the cooking and packaging process to assure utmost safety measures taken by them while cooking, packaging, and delivery of the food in order to increase sales.

After you place an order, what are the first few questions that pop into your mind? I hope they got the order right, I hope the products come safely, I hope the food doesn't spill or get soggy. The one common solution to these questions is the packaging.

6 reasons why packaging is extremely important in food delivery :

1. Retains the quality of food:

The right packaging of food helps during transportation, handling, and delivery as there are different kinds of packaging available for different types of food depending on their size and weight while retaining the freshness and flavor of the food. For example: using aluminum containers to pack food that needs to remain hot, plastic containers for food that can spill, thermocol or dry ice packaging for ice creams, and milkshakes to prevent it from melting.

2. Protects the food:

Packaging food items in the right way by using the right containers can help prevent common issues that occur during food delivery while retaining the quality of food. Problems such as the spilling of liquids, sogginess of bread or crispy food because it's packed together with saucy food, and if it's a meal containing a variety of dishes, it needs to be packed in spill-proof containers either with divisions or separately.

3. Branding:

Packaging food in a certain way plays an important role in branding. By using certain color schemes and packaging add ons like: a business card, a menu card, printing the brand logo on the cover. Even using materials that have a meaning or resemble the look of the restaurant makes the packaging stand out by using sustainable and minimalistic packaging for the presentation of the food and also serves a purpose to the environment.

4. Marketing:

These days only hi-fi packaging makes it to Instagram. Having attractive-looking packaging can encourage customers to take pictures of the food along with the packaging and post it on their social media platforms, this, in turn, creates awareness for the business and increases sales. Some may also use seasonal packaging such as changing the colors and patterns of the packaging according to the festivals or holidays that take part in those months. They could also add freebies related to those festivals as changing packaging might be more expensive. This helps in reinforcing and communicating the brand value to the customers.

5. Makes the food look more appetizing:

Would you prefer eating food that is neatly packed or food that is packed in an unorganized manner? Neat packaging makes the food look more appetizing and makes customers want to order more

6. Labeling information:

While packing food, it is generally labeled on stickers with names of the dish or any special requests in that dish. This makes the process of food delivery and pick up easier as the food is labeled and it is simple to find your dish when orders are placed for more than one person.

Since everyone seems to be judging books by their covers, it's necessary to make food packaging an important factor in food delivery to protect the food from any outside germs, avoid spilling of food, maintaining the temperature, and enhancing the presentation of the food while making it look more appetizing.
