Home-Made Dosa Batter!!

Dosa is not just any food, it’s an emotion for vegetarians. As the staple of south India, dosa makes for a yummy breakfast item. It is enjoyed by people all over the country, making it available in almost all restaurants. It is known as the Indian pancake and is thin like a crepe.

Dosa is a versatile dish. It can be a breakfast item, can be served for lunch or dinner. It is easy to digest and even one Dosa can keep you adequately full. In case you wish to eat a heavy meal, you can add any kind of cravings stuffed inside it. It tastes the best with a home-made chutney (coconut, tomato, etc) and sambar (a curry of various vegetables).

Dosa is a great source of complete protein for vegetarians as it is made of rice batter and urad dal (black gram lentil). Perfect Dosas are a matter of pride, and this requires a perfect dosa batter!!

There are two things that are important while making the batter-one is the proportion of urad dal and rice; second is the consistency of the batter. The batter needs to be also fermented optionally in appropriate proportions and consistency. The Dosa batter is scooped and the spread into a thin circle which turns into a yummy crispy Dosa. In order to overcome these difficulties of preparing Dosa batter at home, readymade Dosa batters are now available in the local grocery shops.

Though dosa batters are readily available in the market, making one at home is very healthy and hygenic in comparison to the one that is readily available.

Unlike Shop batter, homemade dosa Batter is usually made in right proportions with Fenugreek seeds, Methi seeds, channa dal thus making it more nutritious and healthy to consume.

To prepare the batter at home you will need:

2 cups rice,1 cup urad dal split black gram, 1/2 tsp methi seeds fenugreek seeds, 1/2 tsp chana dal, 1 cup cooked rice, water for soaking the ingredients, salt.

Now, all you need to do is wash and soak urad Dal and fenugreek seeds for 4 hours and keep aside. Soak boiled rice, raw rice and thick beaten rice for 4 hours and keep aside. Once all the ingredients are soaked, drain and grind both the batters individually (add required amount of water and check consistency). Combine the two in a bowl ,add salt and mix well. Cover the lid and keep it aside to ferment for a minimum of 12 hours. Once batter is fermented, Dosa batter is ready to use.

Dosa batter is no rocket science and is easy to make but all that you require to make the perfect dosa batter is "Patience". The raw rice and par boiled rice makes the golden dosa crispy on the outer and spongy in the inside.

We at Sheplates make it easy for you to get the batter by delivering Home made Dosa batter at your door steps.
